The project includes the following components:
A research project : Gathering documents, testimonies, and photographs relating to the lives of the 500 girls and women who were massacred in December 1941 in Telz, Lithuania (today Telsiai), the town where my parents grew up. The search for photographs and the conduct of interviews of the remaining witnesses are yielding unedited materials. The collected information about the young girls and woman will be gathered on the page 500 faces, 500 names, Through interviews, a number of girls have been identified by their name or biographical information. At the Lietuvos Centrinis Valstybes Archyvas, a collection of 485 documents with inestimable information about the Telsiai Jewish school system for girls – elementary as well as secondary (Gymnasye Yavne), has been identified. All these information will be digitized and organized on this website.
An Experience of living history : High school teachers and students in Lithuania, France, Israel, and the United States will study the interwar Jewish educational system in historical context. Each class or group will conduct an original research that will lead to a public presentation of creation work. The faculty of the Telsiu Vincento Boriseviciaus Gimnazija School, the most prestigious Catholic high school in Telsiai, Lithuania and a group of students are involved in the project. At the close of the fact-gathering and research phase, each this first group will be invited to express in artistic terms its own vision of the acquired knowledge and experience in a media format to be exhibited at the Vilna Gaon Jewish State Museum.
An installation and encounter will present 500 portraits grandeur nature of the young girls and women of Telz. The installation will be set up for 24 hours in Telsiai and be filmed. The posters will bear a photograph, a name, or a story, or it will be blank if all of these elements are missing. After Telz, the 500 portraits will be ready to travel to other places, ideally great spaces around museums or open public spaces (gardens, parcs). The video made in Telsiai will travel with them. The installation, and/or the video are conceived to be presented together with the creations of the classes.
À cet effet, nous avons entrepris une recherche pour retrouver le nom, le visage et l’histoire du nombre le plus important possible des cinq cents victimes assassinées autour de Noël 1941.
La recherche doit aboutir à une œuvre en trois parties :
1) Un projet de recherche : La recherche elle-même, au fur et à mesure de son développement est destinée à être exposée sur ce site batkamaat.org, en s’enrichissant progressivement des résultats recueillis. Ce site, grâce à la page 500 visages, 500 noms, permettra de publier les informations, les photographies et les récits, après recoupements, qui nous serons transmis. batkamaat.org proposera également des extraits de témoignages, en traduction française, tirés du Sefer Telz, le livre mémorial de la communauté juive de Telz, ou recueillis au cours de l’enquête, relatifs notamment à l’histoire des jeunes filles et femmes de Telz.
2) Une expérience d’histoire vivante : Des classes de lycée, en Lituanie, France, Israël et aux Etats-Unis, seront associées à cette recherche tout en étudiant à travers textes d’historiens et documents la vie de la population juive en Lituanie, avec un accent sur l’exemple de l’éducation juive dans la ville de Telz. C’est un programme d’enseignement appelé expérience d’histoire vivante. Le plus prestigieux établissement catholique de Telsiai, Vincento Boriseviciaus Gimnazija, est le premier lycée à participer à cette expérience.
À l’issue du travail d’étude et de recherche – les recherches seront adaptées au lieu où se trouve l’école et la classe – les groupes d’élèves sont invités à traduire les connaissances et l’expérience acquises en terme artistique sous la forme que les élèves et les enseignants auront choisie collectivement.
3) Une installation, une rencontre: Une installation de grande envergure de cinq cents photographies placées pendant 24 heures dans des lieux qu’il s’agira de déterminer d’abord en Lituanie – à Telz d’abord durant 24 heures – et en Europe de l’Est, puis ailleurs ; en l’absence de photographie, c’est une image blanche qui apparaîtra.
À l’avenir, les créations des classes et le film réalisé pendant l’installation à Telsiai seront montrés ensemble.
Le Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum apporte son soutien au projet et exposera les résultats de cette démarche éducative et artistique dans une exposition.
